Week 2: Experiment 1

Problem:

Experimenting on animating the background, imitating the waves that crashes into the beach.
The difficulty that found in this experiment is that the detail background tend to make it very confusing in animating as the amount of sand would uncontrollably increase as time goes by and would eventually ruin the other area that was suppose to stay still, which create inconsistency in the work.

Solution:

Limited the complexity of the background or create a dope sheet to determine the timing for the waves and be cautious of the timing to capture each frame. Like what Caroline Leaf has suggested that the animation should not be too complex in order to animate the objects, characters, or background should be simplify. However, this background will be use in an animation work; therefore, the point of having it with details is needed.

Sand Animation Study

Sand Animation Week 1 : Work example from Inspiring Artists

Caroline Leaf

The Owl Who Married a Goose (1974)

Caroline Leaf is an animator and artist known for her sand animation from the above film "The Owl Who Married a Goose". Her technique to animate her character in sand is based on making simple shape that easily to manipulate rather than a complicate structure or background that does not allow much changes. By having 24 frames per second, she concentrate on moving the sand slowly on the light box and record it frame by frame with caution. She also did another work with sand animation called "The Metamorphosis of Mr. Samsa", which produced in 1977, an adaptation from Franz Kafka's story 'The Metamorphosis'

Kseniya Simonova

A winner from 2009 Ukraine Got Talent, her work display details and contrast from Caroline Leaf. Her style of telling story is to illustrated it through sand art. Her work usually consist of massive details and changing of scenery from one to another with accurate drawing on sand. Similar to drawing a storyboard by using sand as a medium. Her work would consistently focus on relation between human and war or its aftermath. In 2011, she visited Thailand and did a showcase of her talent with sand animation by telling the story of King Rama IX in the BOI Fair.
